Reusing Canvas course content

Overview of material transfer options

Canvas provides a mechanism to import all or parts of a course that created in any version of Canvas, including EEE, UCOP, and free for teachers. In most cases, this will involve an export of the source material and an import into a specific course space.

Here are a few examples of the type of content you can import into a course space in Canvas:

Copy a Canvas course

If you have instructor or assistant access to multiple courses in Canvas, you can use the course import tool to copy all or part of one course into the other.

You can copy a course using this process:

  1. Open the blank Canvas course space (You can click Go to Canvas Course Space from MyEEE)
  2. Click Settings in the course menu
  3. Press Import Content into this Course
  4. Select Copy a Canvas Course from the Content Type dropdown
  5. Find the original course using the Search for a course text box
  6. Click the appropriate button to import all the course materials or only selected content
  7. Press Import

The original course should then be imported into the current course space.

Note: If you opted to import only selected content, you can click Select Content next to the course name in the Current Jobs table.

Transfer all or part of a course

If the original course was created outside of Canvas, you can use the export and import functionality of Canvas to transfer materials into Canvas.

The process includes two phases:

Obtain an export of the source course

Any instructor can export an entire Canvas course using the following process:

  1. Open the Canvas course space
  2. Click Settings in the course menu
  3. Press Export Course Content
  4. Be sure the button next to Course is selected, then click Create Export

The instructor will receive an email notification once the course export is available. Additionally, a link to the export will become available within the course export page.

Note: The course will be exported as a filetype that cannot be read by software on your computer. However, this file can be read by any version of Instructure Canvas, including Canvas.

Import the source into the destination course

You can import all or part of a course using this process:

  1. Obtain the course export file
  2. Open the blank Canvas course space (You can click Go to Canvas Course Space from MyEEE)
  3. Click Settings in the lower left corner
  4. Press Import Content into this Course
  5. Select Canvas Course Export Package from the Content Type dropdown
  6. Use the Browse button to select the course export file
  7. Click the appropriate button to import all the course materials, or only selected content
  8. Press Import

The original course should then be imported into the current course space.

Note: If you opted to import only selected content, you can click Select Content next to the course name in the Current Jobs table.

Transfer quizzes from EEE Legacy

You can export quizzes from EEE Quiz, then import those quizzes into a Canvas course space using the following process:

  1. Export the quiz from EEE Legacy as a QTI Package
  2. Open the Canvas course space (You can click Go to Canvas Course Space from MyEEE)
  3. Click Settings in the course menu
  4. Press Import Content into this Course
  5. Select QTI .zip file from the Content Type dropdown
  6. Use the Browse button to select the quiz export file
  7. Press Import

The quiz will then be imported into your Canvas course space. You can click on Quizzes to open the imported quiz.
